Riviera will add another 30 trainee craftspeople to its already 600-strong business this year as part of an expanded program that aims to help it meet record demand for its luxury motor yacht products.
The Coomera-based boat builder will team with the Queensland Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DESBT) to help trainees fast-track their careers.
More than 200 people have already applied to be part of the program, part of a newly introduced, state-funded training program introduced via TAFE Queensland.
The extra workers will also coincide with a planned $10 million expansion of Riviera’s 16.8-hectare site to help it meet growing demand for its products.
“This is an important step in ensuring that Riviera has access to the best possible talent to fill the opportunities we currently have available,” Riviera safety and training manager Adam Houlahan said.
“Through this collaboration we have been able to secure a shortlist of quality people with varied work experience, some of them mature-aged who can be trained in the skill sets that we require.”
TAFE Queensland maritime senior project officer Adam Chanter said the program would allow trainees to fast-track the skills they needed to take up various trade assistants’ roles.
“The trainees will undertake a non-accredited training program that focuses on developing practical skills to meet the needs of both Riviera and the industry,” Chanter said.
“From a broader perspective, this collaboration is a model example of multiple government departments working together to achieve positive employment outcomes for all concerned.”
Riviera is filling the positions to help it meet the largest number of forward orders for its luxury motor yachts in the company’s 41-year history.
“Our long-term commitment to training plays an integral role in our ability to create motor yachts that are admired globally for their innovative design, engineering and the most luxurious of interiors,” Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst said.
“We are proud of our ongoing collaboration with DESBT and, in conjunction with our on-site training initiatives, Riviera is not only enhancing the skills excellence of our team, we are also creating the master craftspeople of the future for our industry.”
Riviera has already put on a record 41 apprentices this year.
