While best known for its classic Down East-style cruisers with single diesel-engine efficiency, Maine-based boatbuilder Back Cove has announced a twin-outboard-powered 34O to compete in the booming new-boat segment.
The all-new Back Cove 34O will be powered by a pair of 300hp Yamaha V6 four-stroke outboards, with optional 350hp V8 Yamaha or V6 Suzuki motors available for extra-sporty performance.
The entirely new hull, fitted with standard bow thruster and designed specifically for outboard propulsion, offers cruise and top end speeds approximately 10 knots faster than the traditional single diesel engine 34-footer, Back Cove says.
While a single diesel engine with shaft drive is a great fit in the Back Coves, the yard has joined the swelling ranks of boatbuilders now offering multi-outboard engines as a propulsion source, with the benefits that come with that — shallow draft, low noise, joystick docking, and greater integration with your electronics.
Meantime, as with most models in the Back Cove 30-41ft fleet, the cockpit and helm deck have been designed as a seamless stage for entertaining. The helm deck seating converts into a U-shaped arrangement, or a dinette for four, or a second berth with the saloon curtains drawn.
The standard 5kW diesel generator adds to your autonomy and powers the air-con in the open-plan cabin below. With a spacious island berth, separate head, and shower, the needs of cruising couples are well considered.
Given all the horsepower, we're supposing the 34O wouldn't be out of sorts in the annual Maine lobster boat races, either.
Back Cove says sea trials of the new outboard-powered 34O will be performed in August, 2018, with full production and U.S. boat show appearances beginning this September.
