Greenline, the Slovenian builder of hybrid production-built motor yachts, has returned with fresh backing and a new 36 hybrid built to put the spark back into the brand started almost a decade ago.
Under the auspices of new Slovenian owners SVP Yachts, the new Greenline 36 is said to embrace sophisticated design and cutting-edge technology.
Like previous Greenlines built by Seaway before it went out of business in 2015, the new 36 is being marketed as an environmental friendly concept using an innovative hybrid propulsion system.
It's pretty much the same diesel /electric drive that propelled Greenlines like the top selling 33 to more than 400 units in six years.
HYBRID SYSTEM
The new low-drag hull of the 36 is said to allows for slippery electric cruising, optimal fuel efficiency with modest diesel-engine power, while long-range and high-speed potential if you don't care for your carbon footprint.
With the hybrid option of electric motor/generator, the standard Volvo Penta D3 220hp diesel engine allows for silent navigation.
Developed in association with a well-known German company Mahle, the hybrid system offers more than 6 knots on the electric mode and 18 knots using the diesel D3 at full noise.
The important elements of the electrical system are the four 285W solar panels on the roof connected to 48V charger and Lithium batteries linked to petrol/electric hybrid drive.
The boat can cruise autonomously as low sub-4 knot speeds, while the main engine also doubles as an onboard generator.
If you want greater performance, a Yanmar 8LV-370hp diesel engine option will give you up to 25 knots, but there is no electric mode with this pairing.
SIGNATURE FEATURES
The new 36 retains the band's signature features like a large opening transom and swim platform that add to the waterfront real estate and boosts cockpit space.
The panoramic windows make the saloon fresh and bright, with a fully featured galley with 240lt fridge with freezer, induction cooker with two burners (220V), microwave oven and more.
When the sun goes down, the indirect LED lighting is said to create a romantic and cosy atmosphere, while the entire indoor area is climate controlled thanks to reverse-cycle air conditioning/heating.
Under the front windscreen, the steering console features touchscreen monitors, an adjustable double seat, electric opening sunroofs, and a sliding glass door to the walkaround deck. A wide companionway leads forward.
CABIN FEVER
The twin cabin and single bathroom layout is designed with home-like comforts including a separate toilet and shower, opening ports and hull windows for light and fresh air, and lots of storage.
Scissor berths forward create a large master double bed, while the separate guest cabin has single beds, and rich trim.
Locally, we’ve had a pretty good experience testing the Greenline 33 and 40 on waterways like Pittwater, Today, you still see a few gadding about the place despite Seaway going belly up.
Now with the backing and drive of SVP Yachts, which also builds OceanClass, Shipman and Skagen boats, Greenline is poised to make waves again.
The new 36 has a contemporary design line, with more glazing and less moulding clutter. The question remains whether hybrid power in a motorboat still has pull, but that side of the Greenline remains an option.
