The Zapcat, an inflatable catamaran originally designed for surf rescue, has become the hottest item in low-cost, high-thrill motor boat racing in Britain and it is now headed for new markets downunder.
Powered by a 50hp outboard, the Zapcat is fast and stable and can carry up to five adults on a sedate trip to a picnic. But put a crew of two aboard, set out some buoys in the surf however, and watch out!
The Zapcat becomes one of the world's wildest and wettest rides as the skipper and crew battle to keep it level as it flies and scampers over the waves -- and the other Zapcats at times.
Now being marketed in Australia by Sirocco Marine, the Zapcat can generate forces of up to three Gs through corners as it is hurled around tight racing circuits. In Britain and Europe, Zapcats are often raced on lakes and rivers but the fun really starts when they get into the surf.
At 4.1 metres overall and with a beam of 2.5 metres, the Zapcat weighs just 75kg and can be infalted in about half and hour. When deflated it can fit in the boot of a large car or easily in the back of a ute, which is expected to be a big part of the appeal.
The rugged Duratex hulls come in blue, white, yellow, turquoise and, the most popular colour, red (it goes faster).
Sirocco Marine will have the Zapcat on display in Hall 5 at the 2009 Sydney International Boat Show from July 30th. See the video below for some extreme Zapcat racing in a bit of swell.
