Anyone who has ever lusted after a boat made "the way the used to" should pay a visit to Tim Phillips and his Wooden Boat Shop in Sorrento, Victoria.
Phillips produces classic motor boats of the style made famous in Port Philip Bay over the past 60 years -- hand built with sea-kindly hulls and lots of room for entertaining.
He has now launched his latest boat, the Cheviot 32, and powered it with a whisper-quiet Yanmar diesel.
"The Cheviot 32 is built and designed as an alternative to the popular all-white fibreglass flybridge cruisers," Phillips explains. "There are boating families who want to be more individual in their boating style, so for people who appreciate the artisanship in an all timber hull, the Cheviot 32 fits the bill perfectly."
Looking for the power to deliver excellent performance, quiet operation and fuel efficiency, Phillips decided to power the Cheviot 32 with the latest Yanmar 6BY2 engine. Developed in close co-operation with the automotive diesel manufacturer BMW, the 6BY2 engine shares a common engine cylinder block and other major components supplied from the BMW stable.
Combined with the Cheviot 32's efficient hull design, it delivers smooth, clean and fast acceleration. The 2.9-litre turbochared engine produces 191kW (260hp) at 4000 rpm while weighing (with the Yanmar KMH50A transmission attached) just 362 kgs.
The Yanmar will push the 9.7m and 4.5-tonne Cheviot 32 to a top speed of 22 knots.
With a large cockpit that can fit nine people for cocktails at the marina, the Cheviot 32 has a cabin layout that includes two berths, shower, head, galley, fridge and ample seating. A fixed timber swim platform is fitted across the transom.
