Yamaha rolls out more Helm Master EX joystick control upgrades

Bow thruster integration, remote control and streamlined looks all feature in Yamaha's Helm Master EX update

Yamaha’s Helm Master EX has added new streamlined digital controls and now integrates with bow thrusters, and even lights, as part of a major refresh of the system.

Helm Master EX was introduced to offer full joystick control over Yamaha outboard engines, as well as other functions including numerous automated fishing-friendly features and even the ability to set a virtual anchor for the boat.

The makeover, which comes less than a year after the last major update, has extended to include a new-look joystick controller and a more compact digital throttle and shift control.

“The new Digital Electronic Control (DEC) binnacle delivers a new level of boater convenience and console space savings,” Yamaha said in a statement announcing the changes.

“Now equipped with integral power and an ‘All Start/Stop’ switch directly on the unit, this binnacle eliminates the need for separate power and All Start/Stop switches on the console for both main and second stations,” Yamaha said.

“The new Digital Electronic Control grip echoes the soft tech grip used on Yamaha’s popular Helm Master EX joystick.

“To further enrich the boater experience, customers can also choose between optional black trim or traditional chrome trim to customise the binnacle to taste.”

Likewise, skippers can choose to have their joystick in either standard chrome or optional black trim.

More control

Users who want to use a second joystick will now have full access to Yamaha Helm Master EX’s engine and SetPoint functions.

A big, new benefit for boaters is the Helm Master EX integration that’s available with select bow thrusters.

“When activated, the integrated bow thruster is an on-demand, self-activating feature that works in concert with the Helm Master EX joystick to enhance lateral movement and pivoting by automatically engaging the bow thruster in variable speed to match operator input,” Yamaha said.

“The bow thruster automatically complements SetPoint functions (fishing-specific functions that hold the boat at station) and helps keep the boat on track when using autopilot functions.

“Available for twin- and triple-engine configurations, operators can selectively activate this feature to integrate power and operation of the bow thruster and Helm Master EX system through the joystick.”

At any point, users will still be able to take back manual control by using the bow thruster’s conventional controller.

Yamaha’s CL5 digital outboard engine interface can also now change the backlit colour of the unit with a choice of nine new options ranging from Blue, Sky, Mint, Green, Yellow, Red, Sakura (which means ‘cherry blossom’ in Japanese), Purple or White.

The updated Yamaha Helm Master EX system will be available in the US from about April. Yamaha Marine Australia was contacted about the timing for Australian availability.
