After extensive product development and sea trialling, Seven Marine in America released the world’s most powerful outboard engine at the recent Miami boat show. The 557 — that’s horsepower — uses a proven 90-degree 6.2L small-block Cadillac alloy V8 coupled to a ZF CAN-bus controlled disc-clutch transmission and joystick docking controller.
From subsequent sea trials during the show, acceleration was said to be constant rather than neck-snapping, with a wide supercharged power band. The engine also sounds beautifully smooth, see video below. while looking eye catching behind a compact powder-blue and carbon cowl. But your choice of custom colours and graphics (as pictured).
At wide-open throttle (WOT) of 5400rpm, Seven Marine claims a pair of pre-production 557s powered an Intrepid 370 Cuddy into the mid-70s (mph), some 10 per cent faster than it’s ever gone, while a pair of Seven Marine 557s cruised where existing triples were at WOT.
The weight (475kg each) and drag reductions from using a single 557 instead of twins, or twins instead of triples, leads to fuel savings of 17-20 per cent, claims Seven Marine. And that’s using 87 octane petrol. But you’ll need some US$70,000 excluding delivery to buy one. More at www.seven-marine.com.
