World's first live abalone shipment

Greenlip abalone transported from Melbourne to LA
Melbourne, Monday, December 2,  2013 - FishPac Pty Ltd, manufacturers of the world’s only approved live fish transport system sustained by oxygen, has recently completed what is believed to be the first ever fully successful live shipment of greenlip abalone.
After months of trials and protocol developments, FishPac, in conjunction with its Victoria-based client, successfully delivered 400kg of healthy, 100 per cent live greenlip abalone, ranging in weight from 400 grams to 900 grams, from Melbourne to Los Angeles.
A shipment arriving with zero mortality is a reduction of upwards of 30 per cent mortality through any other transportation system explored previously. This will add a significant ROI increase to Australia’s $81 million live, fresh or chilled abalone export market, says FishPac.
“Greenlip abalone is a delicacy in many Asian cultures, however, it has never been successfully shipped live due to their fragility,” said Peter Rankin, FishPac’s business development manager, qualified marine biologist and former abalone farmer. “The results of the first shipments are astounding and we now have a viable solution to a common seafood transport problem.”
In Australia, live, fresh or chilled abalone (all varieties) accounted for 1583 tonnes, or 50.2 per cent, of all abalone exports in 2011-12. With a value over AUD$ 81 million, the live, fresh or chilled abalone export market is one FishPac is committed to serving through its StackPac transport product.
Gavin Hodgins, FishPac Operations Manager said: “We have cracked the code for the transportation of a seafood delicacy that has only ever been reliably available in its processed format. Peter’s expertise, FishPac’s oxygen system, protocol developments and the advancements offered by StackPacTM have resulted in a near perfect solution.  The next step is to boost the payload to almost 500kg by creating a better mix of greenlip abalone to water.”
Enquiries from Hong Kong and China, Australia’s largest export markets for live, fresh or chilled abalone, have already been received, so opportunities for shippers and their clients are evolving quickly in these markets.
“This is a new market, bringing with it new pricing opportunities” said Peter Rankin. “With the proven FishPac system now opening ports and avenues for greenlip abalone delivery that were not previously available, we are seeing our clients enjoying very healthy margins which will drive volume up. We also believe we can ship an additional 20 per cent in future shipments, so these revenues and margins are only going to increase.”
With 800-1200kg of greenlip abalone already being shipped from Australia each week, the market is quickly developing.
