Win without racing at Hamilton Island Race Week

Great prizes for bessed-dressed boats

Two competing yachts at Audi Hamilton Island Race Week 2011 will each be going home with an impressive trophy without having started in a race on the day.

The trophies will go to the crews that win their category in the highly entertaining Prix d’ Elegance competition, which will be staged before the start of racing on Friday, August 26.

The Prix d’ Elegance has become yet another fun factor at Audi Hamilton Island Race Week; a week of great sailing and exceptional on-shore entertainment. The contest is open to every yacht and crew competing at the regatta, from the smallest cruising boats through to the largest superyachts.

As in previous years, the same two categories will apply for the Prix d’ Elegance:

- The Best Presented Yacht and Crew (yacht in first-class trim, and matching crew uniforms)
- The Best Fun-Themed Yacht and Crew (let your imagination run wild)

This competition is as much fun for the participating crews as it is for the large crowd of spectators who line the deck at Hamilton Island Yacht Club to applaud the participants’ efforts.

Ingenuity and creative genius are the two elements that always set the winners apart in this competition.

In last year’s Prix d’ Elegance there were two standout entries: Howard Piggott’s Flying Cloud took top honours for the best-presented yacht and crew, while the ‘Best Fun-Themed Yacht and Crew’ category saw howls of laughter and massive applause for Ian Ford’s entry.

The competition will again be very keen in this year’s Prix d’ Elegance. It is known that some crews are already well into the planning stage for their entry, which will be judged from the deck of the Yacht Club by some of the regatta’s high-profile guests.

This year the 28th staging of Audi Hamilton Island Race Week is scheduled for 19-27 August. Apart from offering some of the best keelboat racing imaginable around spectacular and uninhabited tropical islands, Race Week boasts a social program unlike anything experienced at any other regatta in Australia. The entry list for the regatta is expected to top 150 by this weekend.
