There was a time when threadline reels were disparaging referred to as eggbeaters. Now the only thing these finely honed machines are beating are bigger and bigger fish on the wider and deeper fishing grounds.
?
Catering for the new generation of big-game threadline angler, Shimano’s impressive 30000SW is a real “pig beater.” A work of art, this finely honed piece of fishing machinery has been designed and built for heavy-tackle threadline game and sport fishing.
Forget two, three or even six ball bearings as the measure of a good threadline reel. The 30000SW has 14 ball bearings, in keeping with all the Stella SW models, and a powerful 4.4:1 retrieve speed that gains a lot of yardage from the extra big spool diameter.
Oh, yeh, line capacity? Get a load of this. The 30000SW can carry more than 600 metres (700 yards) or 37kg (80lb) test, putting the reel firmly into the heavy-tackle big fish class. Load it with 24kg -- as the first field-test model had here -- and you’ll get some 1000 metres, which is the equivalent capacity of your traditional, heavy, big-game overhead.
But unlike unwieldy big-game reels of yore, the Stella is a strong but manageable and easily man (or woman) handled reel perfect for switch-and-pitch baiting for billfish, deep jigging for the meanest tackle-busting dogtooth tuna, locking horns with heavy-weight yellowfin and bluefin, and going hard on kings, Samsons and other serious seriola.
A prize and trophy unto itself, the new 30000SW has been lauded by those lucky enough to lay their hands on one and cast a line or two as the best reel in the world today. Certainly, the new supersized threadline is the finest bit of fishing machinery to fall into recreational-anglers' hands this year.
The catch? Cutting-edge reels like this don’t come cheaply. There are only two test model Stella 30000SW reels in the country right now. But stocks are on the way. One Sydney tackle retailer who has tested the Stella 30000SW says he expects the price to be around $1500. That's yet to be finalised.
What we do know is that this is the "most-engineered Shimano reel ever." Increased rigidity in the body, bail and rotor eliminates loss of power caused by reel flex and makes the 30000SW incredibly durable. The width of the main gear is 20 per cent thicker and 38 per cent stronger than previous gears.
The new Stella has larger-diameter drag washes that offer much greater stability. The result is said to be smooth and consistent performance right throughout the drag fight. There is also a new coil-spring design that allows for precise drag adjustments throughout the fight. This is the toughest and most durable drag ever produced by Shimano.
Meantime, by placing sealing gaskets in 12 critical locations, Shimano was able to create a water-resistant structure that can hold up to the toughest conditions. A further three lipped-rubber seal system is designed to keep out low-pressure water. There is additional grease between the second and third lip that resists high-pressure water while enhancing a smooth rotor rotation. The end result means the New Stella SWB is extremely water resistant.
Suffice to say, the Stella 30000SW ends the hunt for the ultimate threadline reel, with a finely honed piece of fishing machinery built to land the biggest saltwater fish and last longer than a lifetime.
