Wild weather warnings issued for Queensland boaties

Tropical Cyclone Oma is expected to create hazardous conditions off the state’s coastline

Queensland Police has warned boaties to stay out of the surf for at least the next five days as the fallout from Tropical Cyclone Oma continues to batter the coast with extreme weather.

The forecast shows strong winds and large swell are predicted to increase to severe gale force winds and damaging swell by the weekend.

“All boaties, fishers, surfers and swimmers should reconsider any plans which involve the surf over the coming days.”

Call to check moored vessels

Senior Sergeant Edden said it was also essential for boat owners to check the security of moored vessels and ensure they were prepared for extreme winds and damaging swell.

He said before heading out, boaters should ensure they are carrying the appropriate safety equipment and are wearing lifejackets. He also advised them to log on with the local marine rescue service as an extra layer of safety.

Winds are expected to hit more than 40 knots at Hervey Bay and Noosa over the weekend as the tropical cyclone makes landfall.
