The replica of Captain Cook's ship Endeavour, hailed as one of the most accurate historical replicas in the world, is back on display at the National Maritime Museum after a major refit at Sydney's Garden Island dockyard. www.anmm.gov.au

Dec 17 - Jan 1 -- Clipper Round the World Yacht Race stopover in Fremantle. Ten identical 68 foot yachts, each sponsored by an international city and crewed by paying yachtsmen and women have arrived in Fremantle. www.westernaustralia.com & www.clipper-ventures.co.uk

Dec 26 - Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race starts in Sydney Harbour at 1.20pm Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time. Dec 27 - Jan 29 -- Wetworld is full of fun activities for children to explore and enjoy water. There are experiments where youngsters get their hands (and feet!) wet in the Wet Lab as well as the exciting River Races, Aqua Play and the Super Soaker Action Zone. Perfect for kids aged 3 to 9. Dec 31 - New Year's Eve on Sydney Harbour - The theme for 2005/6 is Heart of the Harbour with a throbbing heart on the bridge pulsating after the 9pm family fireworks. The theme is carried through for the midnight fireworks. Jan 17 - Feb 12 -- Melbourne Stopover - Volvo Ocean Race. Boats are expected to arrive from Cape Town around January 17. For four weeks the Waterfront City Race Village will house a range of interactive displays, providing an opportunity to see the Volvo Open 70 up close, meet the sailors or shore crew and learn more about this epic sporting, technological and human challenge. Jan 25 - 29 -- Skandia Geelong Week, Melbourne and Corio Bay. More than 400 yachts will gather for the annual event and for those not competing there are plenty of shoreside activities - art and craft markets, local food and wine tasting, buskers, street theatre and musical acts on three stages. www.geelongweek.com.au

Jan 26 - Australia Day on Sydney Harbour - In the morning hundreds of paddlers race from the Opera House to Blues Point Reserve and a ferry race is held. At midday all types of boats are invited to join a parade around the harbour. In the afternoon the regatta starts, tall ships race and the Australian Defence Forces conduct aerial displays.
