Barry wins Etchells Winter Championship, Audi Winter Series, Newcastle Round Lord Howe Island Yacht Race announced

KEEL BOATS


Barry, skippered by Damien King with crew James Ware, Simon Cunnington and Andrew Butler, won the Musto Etchells Australian Winter Championship off Mooloolaba. Mark Johnson and his Roulette crew of Nik Burfoot and Christian Allen were second. Click here for more.


Race six of the Audi Winter Series 2009 commenced in 8-10 knots of westerly breeze with the full Course A sailed. Larki Missiris' recently purchased Wild One finished first in the Sydney 38 One Design Division. Click here for more.


Col Forster steered Esoteric to a 19 second win in the first race of the Maurice Drent Boating Services trophy on the warm waters of Pioneer Bay, off Airlie Beach. More here.

Australia's highest ranked women's match racing team, Wot Chicks, finished third overall at the grade 1 BoatU.S Santa Maria Cup sailed in Annapolis after being forced into a sudden death situation when the breeze failed to play ball on the final day. More here.


Paolo Cian's Team Shosholoza defeated Ian Williams' Bahrain Team Pindar in the final of the Korea Match Cup at Gyeonggi, Korea. Australians Peter Gilmour's Yanmar Racing team and Torvar Mirsky's Mirsky Racing Team placed sixth and seventh respectively. More details here.


USA's Bliksem, with Australian Nathan Wilmot calling tactics, won the Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series in Italy. More.


The Dubois Cup 2009, an exclusive rally of racing superyachts designed by Dubois Naval Architects, was held at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Sardinia, from June 6-8. See more here.


The Royal Ocean Racing Club has secured the support of Skandia to undertake a feasibility study into the revival of the Admirals Cup as one of the premier offshore racing regattas on the world circuit. Find out more here.


AROUND THE WORLD


The Volvo Ocean Race fleet left Galway Bay on 6 June for the 1250 nautical mile sprint leg to Marstrand in Sweden, venturing out into the teeth of a gale. Ericsson 4 was caught in a huge gust and broke their leeward steering wheel and its cage. Telefónica Black leads the fleet in the Dover Strait - see here.


OLYMPIC CLASSES


Perth 2011 unveiled its new Master Brand for the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships at the Perth Convention Exhibition in front of an audience of Australian media and key Western Australian sporting and political identities. More here.


The first batch of the new Elliott six metre keelboats selected as equipment for the Women's Match Racing event at the 2012 Olympic Games are on their way to Germany to make their worldwide debut at the sixth event of the ISAF Sailing World Cup. More here.


Thirty nations, including Australia, are set to go head to head on Lake Traunsee, Austria, at the 2009 470 European Championships from June 8. More here.

Australian Matthew Wearn wins the Byte Championship at the Singapore National 420 & Byte Championship & Singapore Laser Trophy. More here.


The fifth edition of the Sentosa Optimist Sailing Open Championship starts 9 June, and will run till 13 June 2009, in Singapore at the National Sailing Centre. Find out moer here.


CRUISING


Treleavens' Travels – Ian and Andrea Treleaven's entrance over the shallow sandbar into the Rio Dulce in Guatemala is unexpectedly dramatic, and the captain's blood pressure rose. Twelve yachts assumed the spring high tide to be enough water to cross but three of them didn't make it. More here.
