Weekly Powerboats & Fishing Summary

Superyacht precinct planned for Newcastle, World Powerboat champ returns to racing, Queensland marinas under the microscope, boat shows and more

Summary for w/b - 28 Mar, 2006 12pm

POWERBOATS & FISHING
Australian company Gold Rush Power Boats is launching on the world market the 2900 Gold Rush at Sanctuary Cove Boat Show on Queensland's Gold Coast on May 18 - 21. The luxury 29ft offshore sportsfisher features security cameras and lighting which activates when a person boards and moves through the vessel. The centre cab layout features five berths and a full walkaround/ fisharound deck.

Rolling out again in 2006 due to popular demand is the Savage 'Just Add Water' packages available from dealers nationally as of April. These manufacturer specified, boat, motor and trailer packages have competitive finance rates and a long list of standard features.

One year after announcing his retirement from the sport, the four times Class 1 World Powerboat Champion, Bjorn Rune Gjelsten has confirmed that he has taken back ownership of the Spirit of Norway Team from fellow Norwegian, Bard Eker and will race in 2006 alongside his former partner, Steve Curtis.

PRODUCT
Innovative hand-held wireless remote control, Yacht Controller, will be launched in Australia at Sanctuary Cove Boat Show on May 18 - 21. The Italian designed and patented product allows a boat owner to stand on a pontoon, swim platform or at the bow of the boat and electronically control the engines within a 50 - 80m range.

MARINE INDUSTRY
Azzura Marine, established and managed by sailor Iain Murray, has signed a lease with the Newcastle Port Corporation which provides an opportunity for the redevelopment of the old State Dockyard site at Dyke Point in Carrington to create a premium superyacht precinct.

Naval architect Jens Gravlev has been appointed to lead Perry Catamarans' design team. Danish-born Jens was previously with Stephen & Gravlev, Marine Design and Approvals, Canada, specialists in commercial and patrol boats. Perry Catamarans now has a staff of 110 working at its waterfront Coomera complex on the Gold Coast.

Queensland marinas are under the microscope following an industry and government forum held recently to examine the shortage of wet berths throughout the state. Issues raised at the forum included the need to obtain maximum capacity from existing infrastructure before looking for greenfield sites, and a proposal to identify future sites well before the development stage.

Australian marine companies will be exhibiting at the China International Boat Show, which takes place in Shanghai from April 6 - 9. The Chinese government has introduced a 10 per cent consumption tax on luxury items from April 1, including yachts.
