Weekly Powerboat and Fishing Summary

Team Quantum win barra comp, PWC education package, Southern 80 on schedule, lives saved due to altitude training

FISHING
Team Quantum won the ABT BARRA Lake Awoonga 3x3 Championship in Queensland despite wet and windy conditions. Kris George and Matty Anderson decided to anchor off a point where they had each hooked a barra during the pre-fish but hadn't landed one. Kris caught the biggest barra in the competition, measuring 114cm.

PWC
NSW Maritime launched a new personal watercraft (PWC) education package, ahead of the peak summer holiday season, to promote safety and reduce anti-social behaviour. A short film on DVD, a safety booklet and new behaviour sticker were sent to more than 40,000 people in NSW who hold a licence to ride a PWC. www.maritime.nsw.gov.au

SKIING
Organisers of the Club Marine Southern 80 will continue to work with the various authorities over coming weeks to assess whether the water level of the Murray River places their competitors at any greater risk, but as it stands, the event will be held on the scheduled weekend of 11-13 February. www.southern80.com.au

SAFETY
Gold Coast cycling great Robbie McEwen saved the lives of two of his friends -- league internationals Mat Rogers and Matthew Johns -- after the pair collapsed from carbon monoxide poisoning. The three were on a boat trip to McLarens Landing as part of Rogers' 4ASD Kids Charity Weekend. Covers were pulled on the boat to shield the party from a looming storm but once it had passed they didn’t open them again, causing carbon monoxide from the engine exhaust to be sucked into the cockpit. McEwen's high-altitude training kept him awake while those around him collapsed and he immediately twigged to what was happening. www.goldcoast.com.au
