Weekly Powerboat and Fishing Summary

Bar Crusher's new 620HT, Moreton Bay Fishing Classic success, Stinga wins Hawkesbury 120, new patrol boat for Illawarra

POWERBOATS

As the smallest model in Bar Crusher’s Hard Top range, the new 620HT has been built with maximum strength to take bigger boats to task in the toughest of conditions. Constructed from heavy duty, pre-stressed 5mm (bottom sides) and 4mm (top sides) marine grade plate aluminium, this super-tough trailerable rig measures 6.80m LOA with a 2.35m beam, and features Bar Crusher's unique Waveslicer™ non-pounding, deep-V hull.

FISHING

The 2010 Moreton Bay Fishing Classic was a massive success thanks to the dedicated team of volunteers and staff. With nearly double the number of competitors to the 2009 Classic, the Clubhouse was a daily hub of activity. Classic Catch winner Anthony Gosen won the title with a 21.45kg Jewfish caught on the first day of the event. The largest fish caught in the tournament was a 33.35kg Cobia hooked by Andrew Campbell. www.mbtbc.com

Over the last three months Victorian anglers have been attending open-house Regional Roundtable Forums across the state to have their say about recreational fisheries management in Victoria. The forums were a success with passionate anglers presenting some great ideas for new programs to make fishing spots even better. www.dpi.vic.gov.au

SKIING

The Stinga team of Greg Houston, Kevin Boylan, Grant Patterson and Daniel Campbell won both the sprint race on Saturday and the main event at the Hawkesbury 120. In the dash it was Stinga holding out Hellbent with Pete Proctor and Jason Walmsley, with Blazen taking third with Grant Turner and Mark Weaver. After engine troubles on Sunday, Hellbent were forced to watch from the bank as the Stinga team showed a clean set of heals, showing too much speed for Weaver and Turner who held on for second in front of the Top Gun team of Russell Lewis, Chris Gelle, Steve Morley and James Buser. www.letstalkskiracing.com/

On Sunday 12 September teams of skiers will see the venue and race on one of the courses for the 2011 World Waterski Racing Championships on Moreton Bay, Queensland. www.skiracingqueensland.com.au

POWERBOAT RACING

Following a successful Formula Future World and Continental Championships at the Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club in the UK, the Union Internationale Motonautique President Dr. Raffaele Chiulli said, ‘the UIM is committed to encouraging new junior racers into the sport and to emphasise fun, competition and teamwork. We have an opportunity to outline the importance of safety, education and responsibility and create a pathway for progression.’ www.powerboatp1.com

SAFETY & RESCUE

A new patrol boat has been launched for the Illawarra community in NSW. Boating activities like fishing, waterskiing and sailing are popular with Illawarra families, but there were 35 boating incidents in local waters over the past year – seven of which resulted in fatalities. The new craft will be used for a range of activities including on-water safety checks, education campaigns, and managing traffic during events on the waterways. www.maritime.nsw.gov.au
