Weekly Powerboat and Fishing Summary

Argus E35 launch, Rivieras at Kooringal, speeding on Sydney waterways, fisheries use mathematics, Shen Neng 1 afloat

POWERBOATS

Outback Marine Australia Pty Ltd is launching worldwide its Argus E35 displacement power catamaran at the 2010 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show on 20-23 May. The Argus E35 was conceived to comfortably and safely explore coastal regions of Australia, and can negotiate Australia’s Eastern seaboard’s often shallow river systems. The displacement hull measures 10.65m in length, but with outboard legs raised the LOA is less than 12m to improve marina berth flexibility.

A fleet of 21 Rivieras recently embarked on a 70 nautical mile round journey from the Gold Coast north to Moreton Island via Canaipa Passage as part of R Marine Queensland’s first voyage to Kooringal, a small township located at the southern tip of Moreton Island. Check out Riviera.com.au for more details.

Results from a statewide Easter Boating Campaign ‘Operation Safe Speed’, conducted by Maritime NSW, found boaters on Sydney’s waterways were failing to comply with speed restrictions and safety equipment rules. Maritime.NSW.gov.au.

Andrew Short Marine announces they are now the sole Sydney dealer for the Sea Ray range from 17-foot bowriders to 60-foot motor cruisers at their locations at Taren Point, Yowie Bay Marina, the d'Albora Marina main showroom and Ferguson’s Boat Shed Marina at The Spit, Mosman.

POWERBOAT RACING

Like all good marriages Stuart and Sara Cureton agree on most things –groceries, domestic chores and disposing of the garbage – but when it comes to powerboat racing neither husband nor wife concedes defeat until the finishing line. Sara currently owns bragging rights, courtesy of her victory margin at the season-ending grand prix in the Isle of Man in 2009, but Stuart assures that pre-season pleasantries are already up and running and he is the first to stake his claim ahead of the inaugural Powerboat P1 SuperStock Championship Grand Prix of the Sea in Penzance on May 21-23. FISHING

Queensland is turning to mathematics to increase the sustainability and profitability of its fisheries. In a new partnership the Queensland Government and University of Queensland are funding the Centre for Applications in Resource Mathematics - a group that will use mathematical theories and tools to better manage the state's fisheries. NEWS BRIEFS

Salvage experts have refloated the Shen Neng 1, the Chinese registered bulk carrier which grounded off the central Queensland coast on 3 April. The first step to float the vessel was to ‘blow down’ the vessel’s breached tanks with high pressure air, testing if the tanks were clear of oil. More details.
