Hundreds of migratory fish are being fitted with tags as the Nepean River undergoes one of the largest rehabilitation projects ever to be undertaken on a coastal stream in NSW. If people catch a legal sized fish with a tag they can keep them and report it to the hotline 1800 185 027 to collect a reward, but researchers would prefer them to be returned to the water. A team of Queensland seafood researchers has won an industry award for increasing the survival rate of mud crabs through the supply chain. Improved handling methods, which lower the stress level of the crabs, include re-immersing them for a period, then holding them in a quiet, undisturbed and moist environment. More information.

$300,000 of new equipment has been purchased to further bolster the Port of Newcastle’s ability to respond to marine oil spill emergencies. More details.
