Water Police issue Easter safety reminder

RBTs, avoid ramp rage, and take all your safety gear on the water this Easter

Water Police across the state are preparing for a busy Easter on Queensland waterways. Brisbane Water Police, Officer in Charge, Senior Sergeant David Edden, said crews will be out and about conducting vessel intercepts, random breath tests and checking safety equipment.

"It looks like we’re going to be blessed with a warm Easter with the summer weather sticking around, so that means there will be a lot of people out on the water over the long weekend and during school holidays," Senior Sergeant David Edden said.

"We want boaties to use a bit of common sense and be patient especially as boat ramps and waterways could be more congested than usual.

"We also want people to think about the dangers of mixing alcohol and boating. You wouldn’t drink and then drive a car – so why would you drink and then operate a boat?

"The same applies to speeding. Speed can kill on the water just as it does on the road, so stick to the speed limits. Yes, they do exist on the water too.

"Reduced speed is vitally important in areas where there are swimmers in the water."

Senior Sergeant Edden said boaties should follow a few simple tips to ensure their Easter on the water was safe.

"For those heading offshore, always make sure you book on and off with your local Volunteer Marine Rescue or Coast Guard," Senior Sergeant Edden said.

"Make sure your emergency position-indicated radio beacon (EPIRB) is registered, in date and on board with you, where required.

"You should also make sure all lifejackets, flares and a working radio is on board before you set off. Do not rely on mobile phone coverage on the water.

"Planning ahead before you head out on the water saves lives. We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable Easter."
