Warning: Crocodile attack at Cahill's Crossing

Heed the Crocwise warnings after the body of a 47yo male was found beside a 3.3m croc at this popular fishing spot

The body of a 47-year-old male was recovered around 7.00pm yesterday (January 19, 2017) following a presumed crocodile attack at Cahill’s Crossing on the East Alligator River in West Arnhem Land.

One of the most famous fishing spots in the whole of the Northern Territory, Cahill's Crossing is notorious for its crocs, famous for its big barra, and long a scene of people flouting good Crocwise common sense.

Last year, a video went viral of a local shooing away a crocodile with a thong at the spot. The victim of the croc attack was reportedly from a local community.

Recently, a car loaded with seven people was washed off the crossing and had to wait to be rescued in the croc-infested waters.

Superintendent Warren Jackson said it is believed that two females and a male were attempting to cross the fast flowing river when the incident occurred.

"The two females made it across, however, the male was reported missing a short time later.

Members from Gunblanya and Jabiru Police assisted by East Alligator Rangers conducted extensive searches in and around the area.

"The body was located 2km downstream in close proximately to a 3.3m crocodile," Superintendent Jackson said.

The man’s body, bearing evidence of an attack, has been transported to Darwin in order to determine the cause of death. The local press is reporting the incident as a croc attack.

The crocodile was destroyed at the scene. The local Mayor says something needs to be done about the crocs at the popular spot.

This is not the first time there has been a croc-related death at Cahill's Crossing.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased man and we run this story as a reminder to stay safe in the croc country.
