Warning: check spin-out hatches for cracks

SA government posts warning following boating tragedy

Boat owners are strongly advised to check the spin-out/inspection hatches on their vessels before taking to the water next time.

The hatches are often in the rear of vessels in places where you might walk and are installed to give access to the hull. If they leak, the result can be disastrous. Experience has shown only a small quantity of water is needed to destabilise a vessel.

The link between a cracked hatch and a fatal capsizing incident earlier in the year is currently being investigated.

Plastic spin-out hatches can be damaged by being trodden on, especially if aged. The cracks are not always easily visible so it is recommended you thoroughly check them each time you launch.
