WA Polling Well In Boat Production

Western Australia is the second largest producer of boats in Australia

... and can also claim one of the highest per capita ownership rates of boats, according to Bob Baldwin, the federal parliamentary secretary to the minister for industry, tourism and resources.

Speaking ahead of the WA Marine Industry Awards in Perth, Baldwin said there were 72,000 registered vessels in WA.

"That is not all that surprising given it has 12,500km of beautiful coastline. But it does show how big the industry is. Today there are about 770,000 recreational craft operating in Australian waters.

“The industry turns over about $5.5 billion, exports more than $750 million and employs more than 29,000 people."

“Boating is a significant contributor to the economy in Australia. It is a very big industry and in 2005 we produced more than 50,000 new boats.”
