WA Fisheries is reminding boat skippers and fishers to be vigilant of sea conditions after a series of large waves seriously damaged one of its vessels.
The crew, who sustained injuries in the event, estimates the wave heights at between six to seven metres before they crashed on top of the boat and smashed a window.
The 20m long-patrol boat PV Houtman was undertaking rock lobster gear inspections around the Abrolhos Islands when it was hit by a set of three big waves.
The incident, which happened last Saturday (May 6) afternoon while working in otherwise calm water south of West Wallabi Island, underscores the unpredictable nature of the ocean.
Despite its sturdy construction, the vessel was heavily damaged with its three crew suffering glass lacerations and impact injuries. The crew were treated at a medical facility on Rat Island and will make a full recovery.
Regardless of the damage, the well-trained crew were able to quickly stabilise the vessel and safely motor back to Rat Island, WA Fisheries says.
The department has extended a big thank you to all those who assisted with the vessel repairs and to the Silver Chain island nurse who administered medical attention to the crew.
The incident serves as a reminder for all skippers and boat users to ensure they maintain a constant watch on sea conditions, as 'Huey' has a demonstrated ability to change quickly and dramatically.
Rogue waves and unexpected sets of big waves can break on reefs, around bommies and islands when you least expect it.
