Volvo Penta has rolled out a major update for its Glass Cockpit that integrates with new-generation multifunction touchscreens developed by marine electronics specialist Garmin.
The new Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit 9000 system was developed to make the most of Garmin’s new GPSMAP 9000 multifunction chartplotters that have adopted cinema-quality 4K resolution and up to seven times more processing power.
The new screens also come in sizes ranging from 19 inches to an industry-first 27 inches, and have been optimised so that they remain viewable from a wider range of angles, even in bright sunlight and while using polarised sunglasses.

The Glass Cockpit system allows skippers to monitor the entire boat’s electrical and mechanical health from the same screens at the helm that they use to safely navigate the water around them.
The screens are fully integrated with Volvo Penta’s features including assisted docking, joystick piloting, autopilot, Interceptor trim tabs and Garmin’s Surround View camera system.
Volvo Penta product manager Henrik Karlsson said the Glass cockpit system was designed so that it could continually evolve and improve.
“The beauty of the Glass Cockpit system is its flexibility that allows for continual evolution to adapt to new technologies,” Karlsson said
“With the new 9000 series display, one of the first things we considered was how to make it an integral part of the Volvo Penta ecosystem.”
The more powerful, higher-definition and larger Garmin screens also mean owners now have the option of installing a single screen at the helm instead of two, making it faster and cheaper to install on Volvo Penta-powered boats.
The system is also easy for motor yacht builders to customise the system to suit the vessel on which it is installed.
