Volvo Penta has extended its “silent shift” hydraulic clutch technology to even more sterndrive engines in its range, boasting what it calls “seamless and soundless” shifts when the boat changes gears.
All petrol sterndrive engines, as well as the D3 diesel-engined models, will early in 2020 join the growing list of Volvo penta propulsion systems to take advantage of the technology.

The Swedish marine engine specialist said the move was part of its commitment to delivering “the ultimate onboard experience for our customers”.
“The silent shift feature has been a well-received benefit to customers since the Volvo Penta IPS launch in 2005,” Volvo Penta chief technology officer Peter Granqvist said.
“Now, we’re extending the capability even further to service a growing customer base, regardless of the specific propulsion. Though the technology behind each sterndrive application may differ, the end result of maximised comfort does not.”
The roll-out, which follows on from silent shift’s expansion to include to the Volvo Penta DPI Aquamatic sterndrive in June, means the technology will soon include the Volvo Penta Forward Drive, SX single-prop drive and DPS duoprop drive.
It means the silent shift will now become available in boats of a wider range of sizes and horsepower.
The petrol-engine version of silent shift will make its debut at February’s Miami International Boat Show.
