Volvo launches Interceptor System

New auto trim system for ease of operation and fuel savings

Volvo Penta has introduced its new Interceptor System (IS), which is an automated trim system designed for powerboats over 40 feet in length.

Volvo Penta IS is a fully electrical system with no hydraulics. It uses powerful servos that are integrated into the Volvo Penta electronic vessel control (EVC) platform.

The trim blades generate lift and drag that trim the boat fore and aft as well as side to side. This means that the boat’s attitude can be adjusted in all directions, either manually or in auto mode. In auto mode, the system is speed sensitive and will adjust for pitch and roll, too.

"We developed our new IS technology to provide an efficient and easy-to-handle boat trim system, which will help both beginners and experienced drivers make every trip more pleasant and less stressful,” said Marcia Kull, Vice President, Marine Sales North America.

Volvo says the the benefits of the new IS system become apparent during the acceleration phase when the boat is about to plane. IS allows boats to plane at lower speeds than traditional systems, we’re told, resulting in improved vision and increased fuel efficiency.

In turns, the IS improves side vision by reducing heel. "The effect that this has on onboard comfort is easy to understand," said Kull. "Even when accelerating in sharp turns, and at any speed, passenger comfort is greatly improved."

The system is designed primarily for automatic use with the option of manual override for those skippers who prefer more control. Volvo says that skippers of all skill levels will feel at ease using the IS system.

In automatic mode, operation is via a single button. Manual mode is engaged by using the trim buttons as in a conventional trim-tab setup.

Volvo is claiming significant fuel savings with the IS system as the boat is constantly at the optimal trim angle.

"The Volvo Penta IS has a compact design," said Kull. "This increases boat builders’ freedom when designing a boat with IS. The absence of a trim cylinder or other external hardware reduces service costs and extends the life of the system."

The IS system is also said to be virtually maintenance free. The blades have a self-cleaning function which activates automatically every 24 hours to minimise marine growth. And since the interceptor blades are made of composite material, and will not attract current, the IS has no need for protective anodes.
