Viking 92 Enclosed Bridge

50th Anniversary celebrations today with a new 92 ‘battlewagon' on the way
As Viking celebrates its 50th Anniversary today, on April 1 2014, there are countless milestones to mark. But the largest is the new flagship, a magnificent Viking 92 Enclosed Bridge Convertible now moving down the ‘production’ line.
To appreciate just how big this yacht is consider that one of its two MTU V16 Series 2000 M96 diesel engines producing 2600mhp weighs in at 5071kg, the 4 ½ inch stainless-steel propeller shafts are each more than 5.5m long and weighs 471kg; and each stainless-steel rudder tips the scale at 174kg.
Fifty years is an achievement for a boat builder these days and it doesn’t seem that long ago that experienced skippers and anglers felt a boat over 70 feet was verging on too large to effectively compete on the tournament trail. How things change!
The Viking 74 Convertible launched in May 2004 proved a hit then the 82 Convertible continued the upward trend four years later. Now the Viking 92 Convertible, scheduled for an American 2014 spring launch, has set the benchmark.
Available in Open Bridge (we'd like to see that!) and Enclosed Bridge configurations, the new Viking flagship follows several motoryacht cues including dual mezzanine decks; one in the cockpit and the second on the main level after deck. The latter mezzanine offers both rear facing lounge seating, along with a second seating area and a table for al fresco dining. An outside galley and grilling area are included for added convenience and ambience.
The yacht’s interior is said to be a showpiece of elegance and luxury. The 7.03m beam not only opens the salon but transforms it into a majestic living room with in-built furniture and plush appointments, including a 60-inch flat screen television that rises on a lift out of the teak cabinetry.
An L-shape island in the galley complements the work area and all countertops feature custom selected granite. A pair of walk-in pantries and a full dayhead are forward to make the best use of space. Nearby, a formal dining area accommodates eight guests.
The 92 Convertible has six staterooms, each with its own private head and shower. The full beam master suite features a king-size island bed, a walk-in closet, a dressing table, and his and her private facilities. Crew quarters are aft with access from the cockpit, head with a shower, a small galley area, and upper and lower berths in a private full-beam cabin.
Propulsion choices include offerings by Caterpillar and MTU, while the communication, navigation and entertainment electronic package will be designed and installed by Viking sister company, Atlantic Marine Electronics.
The first Open Bridge boat will have a tuna tower designed and fabricated by Palm Beach Towers, another Viking subsidiary. It sure is a long way up for New-Jersey-based Viking, which has a strong following among the tournament-fishing brigade all around the world after 50 years in the boat-building business.
