With the imminent arrival of the super trawler FV Margiris into Australian waters, Victorian anglers -- like other anglers from all over Australia -- have drawn a line in the sand and are taking a firm stance against the fish-extracting machine.
A show of strength will occur this Saturday (September 1st) when a procession of boats from both the east and west of the state will merge on the West Gate Bridge and then proceed back to Altona Ramp. It's there that a rally will be held to voice concerns over the super trawler and the process involved in bringing it to Australian shores
Spokesman Dale McClelland said that Victorian and Australian anglers have been dealt so many issues in the past two years by the Government, such as marine parks, mako bans, pressure on specific species, and the like, that they have now had enough.
Boats will leave Launching Way in Patterson Lakes at 10.00am and Altona at 10.30am and merge together on the Westgate Bridge to form a line of some 200 trailerboats showing recreational fisher’s solidarity on this issue
We Fish and Victorian anglers believe the super trawler should be banned from fishing in Australian waters on environmental, economic and moral grounds.
All anglers and concerned supporters of the protest are welcome to join in the procession. For more information go to Game Fishing Association of Victoria’s website at:
