Vic Government to invest in boating

Minister announces $25.7 million boost to infrastructure spend

With a State election coming up in November this year, the Vic Government is is vying for the boaties' vote with a significant announcement made on Tuesday (May 6).

The Victorian Coalition Government said it is investing more than $25.7 million in the 2014-15 Victorian State Budget to boost Victoria’s boating infrastructure, access at local ports and marine pollution response equipment.

BOATING SAFETY AND FACILITIES PROGRAM
Minister for Ports David Hodgett said the funding commitment includes an extra $3 million per year for the Boating Safety and Facilities Program.

"The Victorian Coalition Government recognises the economic and social importance of the recreational boating industry to Victoria," Mr Hodgett said.

"By investing an additional $3 million a year for the Boating Safety and Facilities Program, we are increasing the total funding to $8 million annually which is a huge boost for Victoria’s boating industry.

"The program is critical for local councils, agencies and community groups to undertake vital infrastructure improvements to jetties or boat ramps, as well as delivering navigational aids, signage and assistance for search and rescue groups.

"The Boating Safety and Facilities Program has funded important projects including the upgraded boat ramp at Kananook Creek, which is already completed, and the recently announced new jetty at Cowes.

"The Coalition Government is firmly committed to improving boating facilities and services across Victoria by supporting a broad range of projects that will make a real difference to local boating communities,” Mr Hodgett said.

RECREATIONAL BOATING WORKING GROUP
The funding complements the establishment of the Recreational Boating Working Group which was recently formed to identify ways to improve Victoria’s boating infrastructure.

"The Recreational Boating Working Group and other stakeholders will be closely consulted to help identify projects to be funded directly under the Boating Safety and Facilities Program," Mr Hodgett said.

"The extra funding for the Boating Safety and Facilities Program will be welcome news to the Recreational Boating Working Group, which provided some great initial feedback on the program.

MORE MONEY FOR PORTS
Although Mr Hodgett was not specific on what the money would be spent on, he also announced that $10.3 million would be spent on ports.

"The State Budget also includes additional funding of $10.3 million for maintenance of Victoria’s local ports infrastructure, which will improve access and safety in Victoria’s local ports," he said.

POLLUTION RESPONSE
Mr Hodgett also announced $3.4 million funding to upgrade and replace the State’s marine pollution equipment.

"Investing $3.4 million for marine pollution equipment will boost the State’s preparedness in responding to an emergency incident," Mr Hodgett said.

"Victoria's coastline is among the State's most valued asset and it is essential that the right equipment is available to respond to an incident and protect our marine environment."
