Cam Waters, the 22-year-old V8 Supercar driver and champ from Mildura, has chosen the all-new Australian-made 2016 Spy RX22 to cater for his other love, that of watersports along the mighty Murray, wrapping his sponsor's livery around the rig so he doesn't go unnoticed.
Never far from the limelight, Waters started in go-karts aged seven, was awarded Australian Formula Ford Rookie of the Year at 16, raced in the V8 Supercar Development Series for Kelly Racing at 17, and also became the inaugural winner of the Shannon’s Supercar Showdown television series, winning the right to compete in the Bathurst 1000 alongside Grant Denyer.
But away from the race track, the Supercar driver's other big interest is water skiing. Growing up in the Murray River town of Mildura, Waters first skied at age six and has been credited with spending many days and thousands of hours on the end of a tow rope. So when it came time to update his boat, local boatbuilder Spy Boats came to the party with the all-new Australian-made 2016 Spy RX22.
"My dad (Chris) was into ski racing and our family was always on the water. Now with the pressures associated with the Supercar Series, I really enjoy getting away from it all with my mates and spending a day on the river," Waters says.
"The reason I went for the Spy RX22 is that it effectively caters for all facets of water sport. I’m into water skiing, wakeboarding and wake surfing and with ballast and trim tabs, the RX22 delivers the perfect wake for all of them, as well as having heaps of room for all the mates and their girlfriends. I also really love the look of the boat and, very importantly, it’s Australian-made."
Spy says its RX22 is regarded as one of the best Sports crossover boats on the market and that it genuinely performs on all fronts, with a world-class ski wake, super flat barefoot wake, and fantastic wakeboard and surf wake.
Comfortably seating 12 people, the Spy RX22 is powered by the all-new Mercury Mercruiser 6.2 Litre, 370hp V-Drive V8 with Adaptive Speed Control, Customisable Launch Control profiles and Digital Throttle and Shift.
Spy Boats Australia’s Peter Webb was thrilled to build this exciting new boat.
"Cam’s not only one of the country’s most promising young race drivers, but having skied for the best part of his life, he knows exactly what he wants in a ski/sports boat and we’ve been able to accommodate all his needs with the RX22.
"It looks fantastic in the Monster Energy colours and is probably one of the most tricked-up boats we’ve produced to date. Apart from good conditions, he’ll be wanting absolutely nothing more when he hits the water this summer," Webb says.
Clearly, Waters is happy to fly his sponsor’s flag on the boat and, as if a big block V8 isn't enough, he's singing the praises of Monster Energy drinks for a kick.
"They
are a fabulous sponsor of my race car, so when the guys at Spy showed
me the design and colour combination for my RX22, I just had to go with
it. I reckon it looks fantastic, it certainly stands out, and I reckon
we’ll be downing a few of them this summer."
Waters is the youngest ever driver to compete in the
legendary Bathurst race. Now aged 22, he is driving for the Pro Drive - Monster Energy Racing Team and is regarded as one of Virgin Australia Supercars’ rising
stars. His Monster Energy Ford Falcon with a 5 Litre 635hp
V8 has a top speed in excess of 300kmh and 0 to 100 km/hour in just 3.6
seconds.
