More than 40 sailing clubs across NSW and the ACT have pledged their support for the annual Try Sailing Day organised by the Boating Industry Association of NSW.
The clubs will throw open their doors on Sunday, November 7, and have members on standby to take all interested parties -- but particularly children -- for a ride on a yacht, skiff or sailing dinghy.
Now in its 14th year, the Try Sailing Day was initiated by a sub-group of the BIA (NSW), the Sailing Industry Association, in an effort to get more young people interested in sailing as a sport and as a social pastime.
Anyone from rank beginners to experienced hands is welcome to go to their local yacht or sailing club where members will be on hand with their own boats. The owners will act as instructors for the day.
The marketing manager of the BIA, Domenic Genua, says the aim of the day is to bring the thrills and excitment of sailing to those who may otherwise never get the opportunity to step aboard a boat.
"Your age and your gender is irrelevant," Genua says, "You need only turn up at your nearest or most convenient club to take part in sailing in an actual competitive yacht."
He stressed that everyone's safety would be a prime concern but added that children under 18 needed to be accompanied by an adult when they arrived at a participating club. He also stressed the need for suitable clothing and enclosed footwear (no thongs).
A full list of the participating clubs and their hours of operation is availble on the Association's website: www.bia.org.au.
