Deutz, the German engine maker that also happens to own electric outboard brand Torqueedo, has announced it has now added a battery specialist to its ranks.
The buy-out of Futavis, announced this week, will allow Deutz to start incorporating batteries into its future product mix, which includes electric inboard and outboard motors.

“Futavis has extensive technical expertise in electronics, software, battery technology, and battery testing and in ensuring functional safety,” Deutz said.
“The systems knowledge of Deutz subsidiary Torqeedo in the area of electric drives will thus be supplemented with high-voltage battery technology.”
The move will mean that Deutz is likely to sell future Torqueedo products as complete plug-and-play systems, matching the battery technology to the motors to optimise range and performance.
“Battery technology is a vitally important element of our E-Deutz strategy, which we will be further expanding with the Futavis acquisition,” Deutz chief executive Frank Hiller said in a statement.
“With Futavis adding to the strong systems expertise of our Deutz and Torqeedo development teams by contributing its knowledge of components for high-voltage batteries, battery management systems, and safety engineering, we are taking the next step towards CO-free off-highway mobility.”
Futavis’ work so far has been for automotive applications, including passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
