RACV joined forces with Transport Safety Victoria to urge boat owners to take extra care and avoid personal injury and damage to their boats during the recent Easter holiday period. But the rise in insurance claims prompting their advice goes back further.
According to RACV, the number of boat insurance claims lodged by its members has increased by almost 10 per cent during the past three years.
RACV General Manager Insurance, Paul Northey, said that the vast majority of all boat claims lodged during the past financial year didn’t involve persons or property.
The majority of claims centre on damage to the hull, propeller and drive systems.
The most common claims were for damage to the hull, propeller and shaft due to a collision with rocks, reef or other submerged objects. Poor navigation accounted for 67 per cent of these claims.
Second place, with 11 per cent of claims, was damage to boat and trailer while towing, parking and stowing. Of course, expert towing requires a separate set of skills.
Third place went to propeller damage received while retrieving boats from the water. Some nine per cent of insurance claims were due to poor retrieval practices.
“Many of the claims were for incidents that can easily be avoided by simply taking additional caution, both when towing your boat and when you’re out on the water," Northey said.
“Simple measures like keeping a proper lookout, being aware of the environment you’re travelling in and allowing plenty of space when manoeuvring can help to avoid accidents,” Northey added.
