Top 10 Lure Fishing Tips

Top rod Paul Worsteling from IFISH shares his favourite lure fishing tricks

Lure fishing is not simply a matter of cast, wind and hope for the best. Put the numbers firmly in your favour by changing up your technique and optimising your lure's chances of being hit. Here are 10 top lure fishing tips to help you get more strikes...

1. A balanced rod and reel:
This will prevent arm fatigue when casting for extended periods. Advantages here will be a greater ability to sense the slightest bites because your hands will be more relaxed.

2. Test swim your lure: Whenever you change, or rig a new lure, drop it in the water in front of you to ensure it is swimming straight and exactly as it should. Use your rod to move it around, back and forth and make any adjustments necessary before it sails off on its first mission.

3. Trebles can help:
In rough weather when throwing poppers for fish such as giant trevally, Spanish mackerel and dogtooth tuna, you may find the poppers blowing out of the water. If this is the case, try changing from single to treble hooks. The treble hooks will create more resistance in the water and help keep your lure on the water's surface rather than flying through the air when retrieving to the boat.

4. Sun angles matter: Fish will be able to see your lures differently, based on the angle and position of the sun in the sky. So remember to use the sun to maximise its advantages.

5. Tip angle counts: Adjusting the angle of your rod tip to the water will make your lure swim higher or lower, deeper and shallower. These considerations can give your lure greater appeal and put you in the strike zone more often resulting in more fish.

6. Bounce the bottom: When targeting bottom feeding species such as flathead on plastics, it’s crucial your lure is hopped along, making contact with bottom every time. Flathead are ambush bottom dwelling predators that lie in wait. This bouncing motion and disturbance are flathead calling cards for dinner.

7. Scent attractant:
Try using attractants on your lures, added scent or bait can cause a positive change in fish behaviour increasing bite rate.

8. Sweeten your lure: If using a small pusher style skirted lure as a teaser for marlin and sailfish, try stitching a belly flap of dolphin fish or a tuna into it. The scent will make the billfish hang on so much longer and give you a better change to prepare your fly or bait, so you can present it to the fish.

9. Try new tricks:
Enhance your lure's presentation wherever possible and keep them primed. Always think about how to get the upper hand with your lure fishing.

10.
Keep your 'ammo' dry: Finally, remember never put your lures away unless they are 100 per cent dry or there is a possibility of them corroding between uses.
