Tohatsu has launched a new 60 horsepower outboard engine that it claims is significantly lighter and more fuel-efficient than the two-stroke version it replaces.
The MFS60A includes electronic fuel injection, and boasts a class-leading 98.5kg weight that makes it 15 per cent lighter than the M60C two-stroke engine it supersedes, and up to 7.0kg lighter than equivalently powered rivals – making it an ideal option for anyone repowering a two-stroke engined boat.

Tohatsu says its engineers have introduced its “Simpliq Technology” to the MFS60A, which includes a three-valve intake system; friction-reducing roller rockers; and anodised pistons with a unique design.
“The result is a modern, very fuel-efficient, easy starting, smart, performance-packed and environmentally friendly outboard,” Tohatsu says.
“Combine this with creature comforts such as idle-speed trolling control, simple freshwater flush system, multifunction tiller (EFTL), TOCS on-board communication connectivity (option), and you have an exciting new player to consider.”
The new 60hp outboard engine now means Tohatsu has four-stroke engines ranging from 3.5hp up to 250hp, with some of the engines available in an optional Beluga white finish. The MFS60A is also available in Aquamarine, Tohatsu says.
Outboard engines rated from 60hp and above are made for Tohatsu by Honda.
Tohatsu Australia also says it has “selected’ two-stroke outboard engines still in stock ahead of the federal government’s June 30, 2020 cut-off for phasing out carburetted outdoor engines.
Stock still on hand includes 9.8, 18, 50 and 90 horsepower two-stroke engines, Tohatsu says.
“This may be your last chance to acquire these lightweight products,” it says.
