Question: What do you notice that’s different about the Juan Sebastián de Elcano, the famous training ship for the Royal Spanish Navy, built in Spain in 1927 and sailing proudly to this day. Er, almost...
Yes, she is a four-masted topsail, steel-hulled schooner measuring 113 metres (370 feet) long. Yes, she is therefore the third-largest Tall Ship in the world.
?
Answer: The ballast. The Spanish ship was used for drug trafficking and three crew were arrested this month for stashing 127kg of cocaine aboard. The crew apparently tried to sell 20kg of the drug while in port in New York.
The drugs were found in the sail locker below decks. Talk about keeping your powder dry. Authorities suspect this wasn’t the first time aboard the blow boat of a different kind.
As we have reported before, druggies prefer sailing. You can read more about last year's drug busts on yachts that were much closer to home at http://bit.ly/1uQfx6u.
