The annual Superyacht Cup Palma is almost upon us again, beginning on June 23 and running until the 26th.
So far 20 superyachts are signed on for the three days of racing -- and of course the social programme that takes place each and every evening after the competitive events.
Currently in its 15th year, the Superyacht Cup Palma is held on the Spanish island of Mallorca (at the port of Palma), and is as much about the four day party as it is about racing superyachts.
While the sailing is always competitive, involving Pursuit Racing where each yacht must try and overtake as many other vessels as they can before crossing the finish line, the festivities are usually what attract tourists.
The regatta is expected to keep a separation distance of 40 metres between each yacht during racing (collisions in these incredibly expensive superyachts would not be good for publicity, or hip pockets) but the parties that go on until the wee hours will see that gap closed.
The aptly named pavilion on the Palma dock will be one of the focal points for the social aspect of the event, with a huge cocktail party kicking off on the opening night (Wednesday June 23).
Thursday night should be an interesting shindig, with a fancy dress party being held by major sponsors and then Friday night sees Spanish Paella for all and sundry and the infamous 'Yacht Hop' event.
Finally, the Superyacht Cup Palma 2010 will culminate on Saturday night with the awards ceremony held at Es Baluard Musuem, which overlooks the Bay of Palma and its harbour.
