The Boat Works sets 292-tonne heavy lift record

Today's lift of the 46.2-metre Mistress has set a Gold Coast record for the heaviest haul-out to date

The Boat Works has today completed its heaviest lift yet, and in the process set a record for the biggest vessel hauled out of a City of Gold Coast waterway.

Mistress, a 46.2-metre Benetti luxury superyacht weighing 292 tonnes, was hauled out of the water at the Coomera-based yard for maintenance.

Preparing to lift the motor yacht out of the water took two hours of preparation, with the vessel now destined to sit on a hardstand while it undergoes a “brief period of maintenance”, The Boat Works said.

The Boat Works general manager Shane Subichin said the lift was a milestone for the yard.

“Our 300-tonne lift we call ‘Rhino’ has proven itself a very versatile machine that can adapt to any vessel,” Subichin said.

“There’s increasing demand from larger vessels which are rising in number in our region.

Made for massive yachts

“The influx in supply has welcomed additional major marine infrastructure with construction underway on stage 4 of The Boat Works which comprises of four 20-metre-high sheds to accommodate these massive tri-deck and flybridge motor yachts, both commercial and privately owned,” he said.

Subichin said the new sheds would be ready to welcome visiting yachts early next year.

The 40-year-old Mistress – it was built in 1991 and is one of only four Benetti 45M superyachts ever built – can take onboard 11 guests and theoretically cruise from Brisbane to Tokyo at a speed of around 12 knots without refuelling.

The boat features a steel hull with an aluminium superstructure.

While the superyacht is serviced, Mistress’ crew will have access to The Boat Works’ Captain’s Lounge, a bespoke living space that allows the crew to still access the craft even while it is being worked on in the handstand.

Moving boats

The 300-tonne travel lift is one of three used at The Boat Works – including one specialised for multihulls – to perform around 50 lifts into and out of the water at the facility each week.

Owners can haul the boat out of the water at the facility for anything from a quick bit of maintenance to a long-term restoration or refit.

The Boat Works site also hosts a number of marine specialists ranging from chandlery stores to cabinetmakers and stainless steel fabricators, meaning boat owners have everything they need all on the same site.

The Boat Works has recently opened a 5000-square-metre hardstand dedicated for up to 16 cruising yachts and catamarans.

The space allows owners to complete their own antifoul and repair work with access to a liveaboard lounge, ensuites, free laundry and even a courtesy car.
