The Boat Works officially opens up to superyachts

The Gold Coast’s newest superyacht precinct is open for business, with more development to come

Australia’s new superyacht hub is officially open for business, with a 300-tonne lift servicing the refit yard and berthing space for floating palaces stretching up to 70 metres.

The Boat Works facility at Coomera on the Gold Coast now spans two sites spread across a space equivalent to more than 22 rugby fields and includes facilities aimed at making the yard as comfortable as possible for skippers and crew that venture onshore.

The yard is the result of a more than $100 million investment from the Longhurst family.

“We’ve had a cast of thousands working on the development and it is already delivering economic flow on for businesses in south-east Queensland,” The Boat Works owner Tony Longhurst said.

“Raising the standard has always been the motivation at The Boat Works, and the superyacht yard is testament to the Longhurst family’s dedication to eco-development and sustainability.”

The Gold Coast site includes a purpose-built marina with berthing for 15 superyachts up to 50 metres, with alongside berthing for vessels up to 70 metres.

As well as the 300-tonne lift, The Boat Works also has 100- and 70-tonne marine travel lifts, and a 45-tonne hydraulic sealift catering to wide-bodied multihulls.

The development also introduces the Captains’ Club Lounge, a two-storey luxury reception centre adjacent to the slipway that is “a quiet retreat for captains, crew and owners, offering an array of premium services and commanding views over their vessel, marina and superyacht yard”.

“The lounge was designed as a bespoke space for private discussions among owners, project managers and service providers, perfect for meetings, admin, emails and refreshments,” The Boat Works said.

The redevelopment works have included a commitment to preserve at least 200 metres of land along the kilometre-long waterfront, resulting in what The Boat Works said was “a revival of plant and marine life and preserves the ecosystem”.

“The resort-style lawns, palms and citrus trees create an oasis,” it said.

“‘Bio-gardens’ are planted along the yard’s perimeter as the final stage of the self-cleaning function of the tier-level yard.

“All water on-site is treated via the latest high-tech filtration system. Rainwater harvesting captured from each super shed structure can be used for vessel washdowns.”

Adding to the ecology of the site are plans to install a second solar array that will help with the yard’s aim to one day become fully self-sufficient.

The Longhurst family, which also owns luxury motor yacht brand Riviera, has owned the original Coomera-based marina since 2000.

However, the work is not done. The Boat Works plans to expand the facilities further, adding a dedicated sandblasting shed and refit workshops, along with a luxury-focussed commercial and retail development, as part of the second phase of the site’s growth.
