The Aussie Profish 30

In 2002, four fishing mates headed by designer Roger Barnes decided to search for the ideal sportsfisher and, with more than 100 years of fishing experience between them, they had firm ideas about what they wanted

It should have a high sportsbridge, walkaround deck, sleep four comfortably, and - in typically Aussie fashion - have a big refrigerator.

In 2003, the search led to NZ where Barnes met Tony West, the managing director of North Island based Legacy Boats.

West designed the original Profish 30 as an offshore-capable boat with two levels and a high sportsbridge.

Barnes and his team decided that they'd found what they were looking for. So they bought the company, shipped the moulds to Australia and established the Legacy Boats production center near Jacob's Wells, Qld.

The first Australian-built Profish 30 was released at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in May. Differing from the NZ prototype only in minor details and with a more powerful Yanmar turbo diesel (330hp), the boat's unique design quickly attracted attention.

"The first morning was interesting," Barnes admitted.

"The Sanctuary Cove boat show is very style-conscious, and we were surrounded by craft ranging from floating cocktail cabinets to what are virtually small ocean liners.

"With the Profish 30 being a practical, rugged design intended for hard use, it looked somewhat lonely.

"However, our faith was soon justified, with experienced fishermen recognizing the boat's unique features," Barnes said.

The cockpit has been laid out for four to fish in comfort with molded seating, built-in bait tanks and storage bins, while two adults can fish from the recessed bow. However, below decks is where the Profish 30 excels, says Legacy Boats, with clever space usage for four man-sized berths, a galley (with a large fridge), head and fresh water shower.

"This is a boat you can prepare for sea in minutes, and then get out to the fishing grounds quickly," said Barnes.

"In all, it's a practical, versatile design with features that are appreciated by experienced sports fishermen," he said.
