Tea Tree Snapper comp 2005

The Snapper Point Angling Club's 22nd Annual Tea Tree Snapper Fishing Competition attracted a total of 1995 recreational anglers and 845 boats to mark the opening of the Port Phillip and Western Port snapper seasons.

The large field was vying for $70,000 in prizes. This year, a Catch and Release section was added to the competition and the prize ceremony was moved from Snapper Point to the Mornington race course, which allowed more anglers to participate in the social activities.

Leo Cabatingan of Hastings was named Victorian Snapper Champion with his 7.1kg snapper caught in Port Phillip Bay. Leo now gets to travel with three other mates to Whyalla next Easter to compete in the Australian titles. Included in this prize are the entry fees, accommodation and $500 worth of fuel to make the round trip.

Barney Friend of Patterson Lakes came second with Peter Gagans of Carrum Downs claiming third place. Junior champion was Hayley Close of Boronia with a 5.42kg fish.

JV Marine World donated prizes including a Yamaha-powered Quintrex 4.2m runabout on a Mackay trailer, won by Ben Angliss of Rosebud West, who took out the random weight category. Gavin Dobinson won the lucky prize draw for a 3.9m.
