Tasmanian classic boat fest in 2013

Wooden Boat Show, 175th Regatta, timber row and powerboat races

In 2013, two significant maritime events will take place on the same weekend, February 8 to 12, in Tasmania.

The Royal Hobart Regatta Association will present its 175th annual regatta, an amazing achievement in the cultural history of the state, and The MyState Australian Wooden Boat Festival will present its 10th biennial festival.

Together, the two events will welcome more than 600 registered boats in historic Sullivans Cove. Organisers of the two events are working together to mark these important milestones with joint on-water celebrations, under the patronage of His Excellency the Governor of Tasmania, Peter Underwood AC.

If you have an interest in promoting Tasmania’s continuing enthusiasm for sailing, rowing, boating, and all things nautical, the organisers invite you to join in. Both events are for wooden boats only.

Of course, there’s nothing like a friendly race to make things exciting! To this end, The Great Derwent Rowing Challenge is open to dinghies, skiffs, sculls and prams. The rules are simple: the boat must be constructed of wood and it must be powered exclusively by oars and rowers. No sails, motors or paddles are permitted.

The challenge is to row from the starting point of the Royal Hobart Regatta to the finish line in Sullivans Cove at the MyState Australian Wooden Boat Festival in the fastest possible time. Prizes will be awarded in categories for single rowers, pairs and teams.

Another event, The Wooden Power Boat Challenge is especially for power boats constructed of wood. It will begin with a concours d’elegance at the Royal Hobart Regatta Grounds, where visitors will be able to admire the boats as they parade past.

There, a short and exciting ‘spin around the corner’ to cross the finish line in Sullivans Cove will follow. This is an invitational event with more than one class and prizes to match.

Organisers of both races are looking for classic speedboats, gentlemen’s runabouts and vintage racing boats. If you would like to join in the celbrations or if you can recommend someone the organisers should be talking to, please get in contact with either: Geoff Lucas, President, Royal Hobart Regatta Association Tel: 0417 352 264, blacksnake3@bigpond.com or Paul Cullen, General Manager, AWBF Inc.
