Sydney's Summer Aquatic Events Guide 2015-16
Roads and Maritime Services launches the free on-line guide and bookletNavigating major events on Sydney Harbour this summer just got easier with the release of the Sydney’s Summer Aquatic Events Guide 2015-16.
The free 28-page publication, produced by Roads and Maritime Services, features maps, safety advice and tips as well as on-water traffic restrictions for major events including the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race start, New Year’s Eve and Australia Day.
"Hundreds of thousands of spectators converge on Sydney Harbour for these events each summer and this guide aims to help skippers plan ahead, stay safe and get the best vantage points," Director Maritime Angus Mitchell said.
"With so many vessels around of all sizes including for the Extreme Sailing Series under way this weekend, boaters need to understand the importance of keeping a proper lookout and maintaining a safe speed.
"Special conditions apply for major aquatic events to allow them to be conducted safely and successfully. Safe management measures are also explained as part of the guide including a maximum six-knot speed limit, minimum wash areas and exclusion zones."
Covering events from December to April, this year’s guide also includes information about free temporary access to Sydney Harbour Boating Destinations marinas and courtesy moorings.
"While the guide is an essential tool for boaters, it’s also handy for spectators ashore, providing tips on the best positions along the foreshore," said Angus Mitchell.
Kicking off the major aquatic events season today is the Extreme Sailing Series Act 8 Sydney, now in its second year, featuring some of the world’s best sailors as they compete in a series of short course races.
Other events include the SOLAS Big Boat Challenge on 15 December, SPLASH Festival from 1 to 14 January, JJ Giltinan Trophy Championship from February 12 to 21 and Sydney Harbour Regatta from March 5 to 6.
The Sydney Summer Aquatic Events Guide is available free from Roads and Maritime boating safety officers or from waterfront clubs, marinas, outdoor retailers and boating chandleries across Sydney.
