Australia’s best water skiers will take on the gruelling Sydney Bridge to Bridge water ski classic, a world-renowned event that has attracted 98 teams to the greater Sydney region in 2017, starting at 9am today (Sunday, November 19).
The race begins at Dangar Island situated off Brooklyn in the Hornsby Shire and will see competitors race under the Mooney Mooney Bridge and into the narrowing turns of the Hawkesbury River. All up, the race spans 112km, finishing at Governor Phillip Park, Windsor.
Holding the record for the race is the now retired Hellrazor team (opening photo), who covered the distance in 38 minutes in 2013. It is expected that tomorrow's key contenders will need to race under 39 minutes if they want to win.
Such a time means the elite skiers will be covering more than 47 metres every second, with an average speed over 172km/h. Phenomenal.
