SYDNEY BOAT SHOW: Bayliner Element XL

Bigger and better, the new Element XL is still aimed at the budget conscious

Bayliner says that the Element XL carries forward the tradition of the popular Bayliner Element we tested over three days in June 2013, which was an all-new design internally maximising space and convenience, while using Bayliner’s unique M-shaped hull for economy and efficiency from a 60hp Mercury four-stroke outboard.

But the new Element XL adds an additional two feet to the original design, creating even more entertaining space and maintaining the safe attitudes that made the 16ft Element so popular as an entry-level option. In keeping with the Element's design ethos, the price has again been aimed at the first-time owner.

Internally, Bayliner has opted to continue with the inward-facing opposed seating that keeps guests and owners in positions where conversation is easy, without moving around or swivelling into uncomfortable positions on existing seats.

The designers have opted to add the additional space behind the helm seat, which means the previous single-person lounge/daybed area at the stern is now twice as wide and has creatively been turned into two inward-facing double lounges, one on each side of the boat. This is the perfect place to hang out, eat lunch or simply relax, says Bayliner.

Elsewhere in the boat, the moulded-in seats, storage under the bow cushions and easy-to-read helm gauge all remain as per the original 16 foot Element.
Importantly, the Bayliner team worked hard on making sure that this new Element, while adding space and versatility to an already great package, also maintained the behavioural characteristics of the 16ft predecessor. Flat stable turning and minimal bow lift courtesy of the ‘M’ shaped hull were crucial to the success of the Element and remain so in the 18ft XL.

Bayliner says the Element boats are perfect for a range of owners from first time boaters all the way through to veteran owners and the elderly due to the simplicity of use, low maintenance and safe handling aspects. The 18XL will be powered by the latest 2.0L Mercury 115hp four-stroke outboard.

Importers Berowra Waters Wholesale has the Element XL for $37,990 including a bimini and trailer.
