SYDNEY BOAT SHOW: Bayliner 170 Outboard returns

Entry-level bowrider re-launced by the entry-level specialists

For 2014, Bayliner has revisited an old friend with the introduction of the Bayliner 170 OB. The importers say that the 17’6" bowrider features all the design elements you would expect from Bayliner, the world’s most popular bowrider builder.

From the beam-forward design, giving you more forward room, to the strong hand-laid fibreglass hull, the Bayliner 170 OB is all class and innovation.

The outboard powered option provides potential owners with a little more versatility in this package. Power comes from a 90hp or maximum 115hp Mercury outboard which, despite being on average 200kg lighter than the stern drive version, still maintains the comfortable Bayliner ride one expects.

At the stern, the loss of the full width swim platform is compensated by two smaller platforms either side of the outboard engine. While that sounds like less real estate back there, the upside is that Bayliner has created more internal space available where you’ll be spending most of your time. The lack of a large engine box means that the full width of the boat is available internally and allows for storage underneath the aft rear lounge. There is also a neat lift-out cushion allowing access to the port side swim platform.

Adding to the internal space, Bayliner elected to redesign the gunwales and use a much thinner profile than previously seen, increasing the internal width of this model to almost 2.11m from the aft all the way to the front windscreen.

Forward of the transom bench seating, storage pockets have been incorporated into the sides, the helm and passenger’s seats swivel and the passenger’s console sports a lockable glove box. Up front the bow also has seating for two. Watersports fans can choose between optional ski tow pole, or wakeboard tower adding yet another element to this affordable package.

Hull construction of the 170 OB features hand-laid glass with a vinylester skin coat. Carpeting internally is nylon while all fittings are quality stainless-steel. The superstructure features fibreglass stringers and the deck is gelcoated marine ply.

If you’re looking for a sporty option for the family, the 170 OB has a little of everything at an affordable price. In fact, importers Berowra Waters Wholesale is offering the 170 OB with a 115hp Mercury for $37,790 which includes ski pole, bimini and trailer.
