Swan 48

Following the precedent set by the Swan 60, Finnish builder Nautor has launched the Swan 48 in two versions - a cruiser/racer for the yachtsman who wants a cruiser with the performance of a race-bred hull, and the Regatta version, an IMS-orientated compet

Designed by Frers the versions use the same basic hull which features a short bow overhang. The maker says this configuration increases waterline length at speed, with a sharp fine entry for upwind bite and wave-piercing performance.

The Swan 48's U-shaped hull sections gradually become fuller going aft with maximum beam just forward of station seven. The vessel's keel and rudder shapes are optimised to give a low centre of gravity, maximum sail carrying power and a high level of lift for windward performance, with minimal drag and unwanted motion effects, the company told Trade-A-Boat.

The hull is of single skin construction using glass/aramid hybrid fibre-reinforced polyester laminate (vinylester laminate on the Regatta version) with a high proportion of unidirectional layers. The deck is of sandwich construction (vacuum-bagged in the Regatta version), with a variable density foam core.

The Regatta version's keel has a shorter cord length and is deeper and slightly lighter than the Cruiser/Racer.

The Regatta features a 7/8 fractional rig as standard, while the Cruiser/Racer provides the choice of a traditional masthead configuration for easier handling options, including roller furling sails for the more cruising-orientated yachtsman. A 15/16 fractional rig with swept spreaders for maximum reaching power and upwind capability is also offered.

The 48's deck layout has been designed for easy handling and control. Forward, the swept-back pulpit allows for easier setting of the asymmetric spinnaker, while the dual cockpit configuration provides clearly separated working zones for racing.

The main companionway leads below decks from the smaller forward cockpit, leaving the aft cockpit clear for racing manoeuvres or as a spacious control area during more relaxed sailing.

Below decks there is a central saloon with L-shaped dining area to port and a single settee/berth to starboard.

Immediately to starboard of the main companionway is a spacious navigation station. The galley is situated to port and features worktop space and stowage.

The standard Cruiser/Racer layout features two double cabins, each with en suite heads and shower. Alternatively a three cabin layout can be specified, with an owner's cabin aft and two guest cabins forward.

The Regatta version substitutes the forward cabin with a large working area -- ideal for sail handling and packing. Two pipe berths are standard with a removable set of pipe berths in the saloon above the settees.
