Suzuki has introduced Suzuki Precision Manoeuvering (SPM), providing joystick-control capability for owners of its outboards equipped with Suzuki Precision Control (SPC) electronic throttle and shift.
Over the past few years, the popularity of joystick control has been steadily gaining ground. Using a joystick controller, the ability to manoeuvre forward, reverse, diagonally and even sideways is now as easy as a flick of the wrist.
Owners of Suzuki DF150G, DF175G, DF250AP and DF300AP outboards can now upgrade their present boats to SPM, or have this capability included when repowering or purchasing a new boat with these select Suzuki outboards.
SPM takes advantage of the electronic throttle and shift controls built into these select Suzuki models. A new electronic power-steering system using onboard hydraulic actuators, replaces conventional hydraulic steering. A robust control module integrates shift, throttle and steering to deliver 360-degree control of the boat, says Suzuki.
Using this new system, the skipper switches from steering wheel to joystick when manoeuvring in close quarters, for example, when pulling into a crowded fuel dock, entering a tight marina pen or driving onto a trailer.
Suzuki says anglers will appreciate the precise control when positioning a boat over structure or when dropping anchor to hold position over “the spot.”
The SPM system has been engineered for optimal safety, says the big Japanese engine maker, with redundant sensors and back-up systems to assure reliable operation.
John Haines Junior from The Haines Group, the Australian importers of Suzuki outboards, recently flew to Japan to test the new SPM system. We expect the new manoeuvring system will be available here in 2014, but watch this space for updates and further news.
