Superyacht deal for NSW

New South Wales premier Morris Iemma has revealed plans for a major boat builder to expand its operations to Newcastle, where it will make luxury superyachts to be sold internationally for more than $20 million each

Mr Iemma said Azzura Marine, owned by Iain Murray, had signed a 10-year deal with the Newcastle Port Corporation to set up shop in the Hunter; a move that could eventually generate 400 jobs.

"The yachts to be built in Newcastle will be even bigger and more luxurious than those being built by Azzura on the Gold Coast," Iemma said.

"At Newcastle, Azzura has secured a 2.3-hectare site where it will build superyachts up to 120m long. They will be among the ultimate private cruising vessels afloat, featuring the most up-to-date technology, fine craftsmanship, and unimaginable luxury."

Murray said Azzura was excited about the expansion into the Hunter.

"We chose Newcastle because it is an unrestricted deepwater port with a highly-skilled marine shipbuilding and engineering workforce," he said.
