Superyacht catches fire, gutted on maiden voyage

The all-new 45-metre ISA Yachts superyacht was to be one of the stars of the Cannes Yachting Festival

A 44-metre superyacht that was to be one of the stars of September’s Cannes Yachting Festival has burnt almost to its waterline on its maiden voyage.

Images show the Aria SF, a 43.7-metre aluminium twin-engined superyacht built by Italian shipyard ISA, engulfed in flames off the coast of Spain.

Media reports said nine guests and seven crew were onboard the superyacht when it caught fire. The reports added that the superyacht’s crew issued a mayday call around 5pm, with all onboard rescued.

The superyacht was seen burning for at least three hours before the flames were extinguished, with video posted on social media showing flames spreading as plumes of black smoke rose inot the sky. Early reports say the fire broke out in the kitchen of the Aria SF while it was anchored.

The Aria SF is the first build of ISA’s new Gran Turismo 45 yacht line. The Italy-built superyacht first hit the water in April this year and was delivered to its new owner, an Italian businessman, in June.

The latest reports said what was left of the superyacht would be towed back to Ibiza.
